Darrent Williams CB Oklahoma St. 59 176
There may not have been a better pure cover corner in the Big 12 over the past four years than Williams. He moved into the starting line up half way through his freshman season, displaying the big play ability and aggressiveness he would become known for over his career. He finished the year with 33 tackles and 2 interceptions, both of which were returned for touchdowns. As a sophomore, he took his game up a notch and tallied 53 tackles and 3 interceptions, returning one of them for a TD. As a junior he added return duties to his defensive ability. He posted career highs with 66 tackles and 6 INT(returning two for TDs), and put up a 17.9 punt return average, with two of those being returned for touchdowns. His senior year was cut short due to injury, but he still finished with 21 tackles and a 27.7 punt return average with one touchdown.
Darrent Williams is arguably the best pure cover man in this draft. He has excellent athleticism, quickness, and closing speed. He can mirror any move the WR makes, and can run step for step with anyone. He has great ball skills and makes a lot of plays on the ball. He had 11 interceptions and broke up more than 30 passes during his career. Williams is also a big time punt returner. Whether at corner or returning punts, he brings a lot of big play ability. He returned 5 INTs and 3 punts for touchdowns during his career.
With his talent and versatility, hes going to have some suitors come draft day. Despite his size, I see someone taking him in the second round, because his ability to cover the speed receivers is second to none. He should be a solid nickel corner and return man from the get go in the NFL. He doesnt possess the upside of a true shutdown corner because of his lack of size, but he will have an impact in the NFL.
