Greene spent a year at Milford Academy before enrolling at Iowa. He did little to establish himself on the field during his first two seasons for the Hawkeyes, rushing for just 378 yards and two touchdowns total. Greene was ineligible as a junior, and had to sit out the season. That time away was a learning process for him, and it worked wonders. He got eligible at a community college during his time away and came back in a big way. Greene won the Doak Walker Award after rushing for 1,850 yards and 20 touchdowns this season.
Strengths
Greene is an absolute load to tackle. He has a short, stocky build and is tough to contain once he gets a head of steam. He is a powerful runner that runs through arm tackles, and refuses to go down on first contact. Greene thrives as a workhorse and can handle the load of 20 plus carries a game. He also shows surprising quickness and footwork for a 230lber. He gets to full speed quickly and has the ability to make the first defender miss and get up the field. Greenes limited action early in his career could be to his benefit now, as he does not have much wear on his body.
Weaknesses
There is really only one season of film to watch on Greene because he only received substantial playing time in one season. He has to prove that hes more than a one year wonder and has the ability to carry his game over to the next level. Although he has good acceleration, Greene lacks the second gear to consistently outrun defenders. He is also very limited as a receiver, with just 11 career catches to his credit.
Future
Shonn Greene came out of nowhere to become a fine running back, and is taking his game to the next level. With a year at a prep school and a year off in 2007, he is already 23 years old and ready to get paid. He is an impressive interior runner, and that should carry over to the NFL. His lack of breakaway speed and receiving skills may limit his upside and ultimate impact, but he will be a very good addition for any team looking for a power back.
