Delmas made an immediate impact as a true freshman, starting every game that year and finishing with 82 tackles, four for loss, 1.5 sacks and three interceptions. He earned All MAC 2nd team honors, as well as Freshman All America. As a sophomore he had 52 tackles, .5 for loss, and four picks. Delmas again earned All MAC honors as a junior, when he tallied 64 tackles, three for loss, a sack and an interception. He put it all together during his final season, finishing with a career high 111 tackles, four for loss, and four interceptions on his way to 1st team all conference honors and some All America awards.
Strengths
Delmas is a tough and heady football player. He is aggressive and flies around the field and is not afraid to mix it up near the line of scrimmage in run support. He seems to always be around the action, no matter where the play ends up. In coverage, Delmas reads the action quickly and rarely allows a player to get behind him. When the ball is in the air, he shows the ability to locate it and can get to it to break up the action. Delmas is a solid athlete whose quick reactions allow him to get to the action faster than most players. He also has some experience returning kicks, so he brings some added value to special teams.
Weaknesses
From a physical standpoint, there isnt anything standout about Delmas game. He isnt slow and is not unathletic, but these traits do not jump out at you when you watch him. His game is better suited for the strong safety position, but his size is average and pushes him to free safety. He may have trouble matching up in one on one situations in coverage because of his lack of standout change of direction skill. Delmas has had some problems securing and finishing off tackles, and must improve in this area.
Future
Delmas is a tough prospect to gauge. He stands out because he is always around the action but his physical tools are merely average. Many love him for his toughness and instincts. He is a solid prospect that has risen in the post season because of his Senior Bowl and decent combine, and is now in the discussion to be the first safety selected. He doesnt wow anyone with physical tools but sometimes that is overrated. Delmas may never be a star but he should have a solid NFL career. He is a solid third round pick that may go higher in the draft that he should because of the hype he has received leading up to the draft.
