Jaison Williams WR/TE 6'4 237 Oregon 4.67

By: Robert Davis

After redshirting his first year in Eugene, Williams flashed some big play ability as a freshman in 2005. He caught 15 balls for 245 yards and three touchdowns in reserve action. He made a huge impact as a sophomore, finishing the season with 68 receptions for 984 yards and six touchdowns. Williams continued his success in the Pac 10 last year as a junior, hauling in 55 balls for 844 yards and a career high eight touchdowns. The Ducks passing offense was not as explosive as a senior and his numbers suffered because of it. He still caught 36 passes for 473 yards and four touchdowns.

Strengths

You can see Williams biggest strength on the field as soon as you see him: he has tremendous size. He is tall and thick, and is a nightmare for defensive backs to match up with. He towers over most and can physically outmuscle defenders for the football. Williams is a good athlete, showing the ability to adjust to the football in the air and that should make him real threat in the red zone in the NFL.

Weaknesses

Williams may not have a true position in the NFL. He plays receiver at Oregon, but may need to move to tight end in the NFL. He has only average speed for the WR spot, and may lack the change of direction skills to come in and out of breaks during his route against NFL cornerbacks. That causes the switch to TE where he will need to learn to block and take on front seven defenders at the line of scrimmage, and learn how to catch the ball against players more comparable in size. Williams also has the propensity to get lackadaisical at times, and may need to have someone constantly pushing him to be his best.

Future

Jaison Williams has an intriguing combination of size, athleticism, and production as a wide receiver in college but he has a lot to prove as far as his future as a pro. If he wants to remain at WR, he may need to shed a few pounds to gain quickness. Wherever he plays, he needs to play with the same intensity level on every snap. If he can do that, whether he is a WR, TE, or an H-Back, Williams could have a place in the NFL because he has the physical talent to do so. Williams post season didnt do anything to improve his stock, although his pro day numbers were solid. He showed up in Indianapolis for the combine weighing 237lbs and clocked a 4.67 40. Three weeks later at his pro day, Williams had dropped six pounds to 231, and turned in impressive 4.49 and 4.57 times in the 40 to go along with a 36.5" vertical.
