Coffman impressed immediately after stepping foot on campus at Missouri, and had a big impact as a freshman for the Tigers. He caught 47 passes for 503 yards and four touchdowns, earning Freshman All America honors for his success. He managed to push aside a sophomore slump a year later, improving his numbers to career highs of 58 receptions for 638 yards and nine touchdowns. Coffman was again a big playmaker as a junior, hauling in 52 passes for 531 yards and seven touchdowns. He closed out his career winning the Mackey Award, given to the nations top tight end, after hauling in 83 passes for 920 yards and ten touchdowns.
Strengths
Coffman is a very difficult match up for opposing teams. He has a long, lean frame and knows how to get open. He can find the soft spot in a zone and set up for his QB or go up in one on one situations and pull down the ball over the defender. Coffman is a solid athlete with very good body control. He can make the difficult grab look easy, and he hauls in all the easy passes as well. He is a guy who should come in and be a very good receiving option right away. Coffman shows some potential as a blocker, displaying the effort to put his body on a man and help the play unfold.
Weaknesses
Like most big time receiving tight ends, Coffman is lacking as a blocker. He tries, but he simply is not strong enough to make a difference. He will have to bulk up and get stronger in order to maximize his potential, because he may be limited to an Hback role if he doesnt improve. As a receiver, he lacks the foot speed to create big plays down the field.
Future
Coffman is a quality tight end that should have a solid NFL career. If he can bulk up and show some improved strength he has the talent to be a starter. This a solid class for tight ends and workouts will go a long way in distinguishing everyone from each other. Coffman has an excellent chance at landing in the second round with a solid showing after the season. He did not work out at the combine due to surgery to fix a foot fracture.
