Pettigrew redshirted his first season as a Cowboy but started nine games a year later. He hauled in 11 passes for 128 yards and a touchdown during his freshman season on the field. As a sophomore, he became more of a factor on offense bringing in 24 balls for 310 yards for four scores. Pettigrew was a go to guy for the offense as a junior, earning all Big 12 honors after catching 35 passes for 540 yards and four touchdowns. He closed out his Cowboy career with 36 receptions for 421 yards despite playing just nine games because of an ankle injury.
Strengths
Pettigrew is a solid all around tight end. He is a rare TE prospect that can be a factor as a receiver and a blocker. He has excellent size and uses it very well on the field. Pettigrew is a very good intermediate receiver and knows how to get open underneath and will catch anything thrown his way. His athleticism and natural strength make him a load to bring down once he has the ball in his hands. He also shows the willingness to block, and uses his size and strength to help out when he is not running routes.
Weaknesses
As far as being a premium tight end with the ability to go in the Top 10-15 picks, Pettigrew lacks the explosive playmaking ability to warrant such a selection. He doesnt wow you with his excellent speed or jaw dropping athleticism, he just has a nice overall package that works very well. Pettigrew was arrested after his junior season for assaulting a police officer and public intoxication. That may bring into question his maturity level, so teams will do their homework on his background as well.
Future
With most top tight end prospects being glorified receivers, it is nice to see a TE with an all around game. Pettigrew has solidified himself as the top tight end in the draft with a strong showing at the Senior Bowl and combine. He would be excellent value in the last half of the first, but could go higher if the need arises for some team picking in the top 20.
