Thomas spent the 2003 season redshirting, recovering from a dislocated shoulder. As a freshmen the following year, he showed big play potential with two interceptions in reserve duty. Slated for a breakout role in 2005, Thomas injured his knee in the second game and missed the rest of the season. He came on huge as a junior though, even if it took longer than anticipated to make an impact. He was USCs top corner, and he proved to be an all around standout with 50 tackles, three for loss, two picks, and 12 deflections. As a senior, he again drew the oppponents best receiver and finished the season with 41 tackles, three for loss, a sack, and four interceptions.
Thomas is a corner that has very good size, and is not afraid to get physical with receivers. He doesnt shy away from contact, and is active in run support. He is not just a big guy however. He shows the ability cover down the field, and has the awareness to pick up the ball in the air and make plays on it. With his size and ability to hit, Thomas could also project to safety in the NFL, giving his team some flexibility on how to use him.
Thomas can have some problems with the smaller, quicker receivers. Hell lose a step in and out of breaks, and does not have the speed to catch up. He may also lack the true blazing speed to be the type of corner that can lock down all types of receivers.
Thomas is a player that has a definite future in the NFL, and another solid year should put him on the first day. His blend of size, athleticism and versatility will find him a home in the NFL. He has the skills to play corner, but someone may like his ball skills and cover ability as a free safety.
