New Free Agency Winners and Losers

Maurice Purify WR 63 224 Nebraska 4.56

By: Robert Davis

Purify had to go the junior college route out of high school, ending up at perennial power City College of San Francisco. He had a good freshman season, hauling in 24 passes for 444 yards and 11 touchdowns on the year. He absolutely blew up as a sophomore, coming through with 68 receptions for 1,318 yards and 19 touchdowns. In his first season with the Huskers, he hauled in 34 passes for 630 yards and seven touchdowns, earning 2nd team All Big 12 honors. He improved upon those numbers as a senior, catching 57 passes for 814 yards and nine touchdowns.

Purify is a nice sized receiver that is a threat all over the field. He has the height and strength to go over the middle and take a hit, but also the body control to go up and get the ball in the air and take it away from the defender. He is a very good athlete, and should develop into a force in the red zone. His size should make him a nice intermediate threat, but his athleticism could allow him to develop into a vertical threat.

Quickness in and out of his breaks may be the thing that keeps Purify from maximizing his potential. He may not be able to get open against NFL corners on a consistent basis. His size will allow him to match up well against most corners, but he will need work to get open.

Purify has an excellent combination of size and athleticism, which could make him attractive in April. Purify may lack the explosion to be a playmaker but he has potential and ran well at the combine to solidify his stock in the fourth or fifth round.
