McClain had a minimal impact as a freshman, finishing with just 11 tackles in reserve action. He improved to 20 tackles, one for loss, and a sack as a sophomore. McClain broke out with a big year in 2006, finishing with69 tackles, 14.5 for loss, and 9.5 sacks on the year. His senior year was not as productive, although he did finish with 77 tackles, six for loss, and 1.5 sacks on the year.
McClain is a versatile linebacker that may have the ability to play inside or out in a 3-4 defense. He has proven to be a quality pass rusher off the edge for the Cuse. Playing end and lining up with his hand down, he has shown the ability to get off the line quickly, and shows some strength at the point of attack to disengage from a blocker and get to the QB. As an inside linebacker, he is an excellent run stopper between the tackles, quickly filling a lane to plug a hole and make the play.
Although McClain brings the versatility to project to two positions, he lacks the ideal skills to stand out at either. As an outside linebacker in a 3-4, he lacks ideal speed and quickness to consistently come off the edge. As an inside linebacker he is limited to run stopping duties because he does not show the range or ability to drop back into coverage and be a factor.
McClain is a guy that projects better as a run stopping inside linebacker, although most of his success came as a pass rusher off the edge. He may lack the ideal upside and may just be a two down guy but he is physical and should be able to provide an impact in the NFL. His experience off the edge can only help his case at finding a roster spot because he could shift outside in an emergency.
