Having an immediate impact in the SEC is a tough thing to do, but Earl Everett did just that as a freshman in 2003. He finished the year with 52 tackles, three for loss, and three sacks. As a sophomore he improved to 69/5.5/4.5 and earned 2nd Team All SEC honors in the process. Everett had similar numbers as a junior, where he finished with 67/4/1 to go along with two picks. As a senior, he posted a career high 78 tackles, six for loss, and one sack on the year.
Everett is a very good athlete with excellent speed. He has the speed to chase plays down all over the field. His combination of speed and athleticism allow him to drop into coverage and stay with most backs and tight ends. He has a lot of experience inside, but his talent projects better to the outside. That could give him added value because of his ability to play multiple spots in a pinch.
Like most speed linebackers, Everett does not fare well at the point of attack. He can be taken out of running plays by blockers, and he does not get off blocks well. Hes going to have to get stronger to improve his all around skills.
For a team looking for an attacking linebacker, Everett would be a great choice. He is aggressive and pursues well, but he probably would not be the best fit if asked to read and react all the time. He needs to be allowed to attack to reach his full potential. His poor performance in speed and agility drills have made some question his speed, but it is there on gameday. His draft stock may have suffered though, and he may not be taken until the third round now. If he falls out of the Top 75, someone will have landed themselves a steal.
